He was born as Kang Eui-geon (강의건) but legally changed his name due to his family and relatives having difficulty pronouncing his birth name. He participated in Produce 101 Season 2, and is from MMO Entertainment. During the final broadcast of Produce 101 Season 2 he ranked 1st with a total of 1,578,837 votes, being declared as the overall winner of Produce 101 Season 2 and given the center position of Wanna One. Prior to appearing on Produce 101 Season 2, Daniel appeared on Her Secret Weapon as a backup dancer for Fiestar's Cao Lu during her performance of "Invitation" by Uhm Jung-hwa.
