Several months after "debris," the wreckage of an alien spacecraft, crashes on Earth, CIA officer Bryan Beneventi and MI6 agent Finola Jones lead a task force tasked with identifying, locating, and recovering. debris before it falls into the wrong hands. After two men illegally buying a piece of rubble at a hotel narrowly escape capture (though one of them later appears trapped in a concrete pillar), Bryan and Finola are redirected to Wichita, Kansas to investigate. several missing persons linked to a large piece of rubble. Finola succumbs to the influence of the rubble, manifesting as the deceased son of a grieving mother; the rubble felt her pain and now they are trying to sustain themselves by feeding off the life energy of various men and women whom she believes to be her "fathers". Bryan finds the boy's sister and convinces her to talk to her comatose mother. When the girl begs her mother to accept the death of her brother, the boy disappears and Finola and the other victims return to normal. On the return flight, Bryan is contacted by his controller, who asks him to keep a secret from his partner: Finola's father, astrophysicist George Jones, who was believed dead, is alive.
The team is called in to investigate a ring of metal objects that form a barrier around the town of Fleetwood, Pennsylvania. While trying to locate a piece of rubble, they find multiple copies of a man named Eric who struggle with amnesia and eventually die. Using the epicenter of the ring, they locate Eric's house and discover that a piece of rubble had struck him, creating the copies to try to locate what he values most while forming the barrier to keep the others out. The debris begins to clone Bryan, forcing him to shoot his own clone. Finola discovers that the original Eric probably got into his car before he passed out, that he had been dragged to the barrier; she also discovers that Eric had just gotten a job in San Francisco (California) and had broken up with his girlfriend. As the rest of the team closes the rubble to contain it, Bryan and Finola race to retrieve the real Eric as the barrier begins to contract. Eric calls his ex-girlfriend to agree to stay at Fleetwood, ending the effects of the rubble. Meanwhile, Bryan learns that the CIA and MI6 plan to exhume Jones's body, while Finola tries to reconcile with her sister Dee hers.
A public service worker in Millersburg (Ohio) discovers a strange object that, studying the work of George Jones, Bryan identifies as a portal to another dimension; The team learns that a missing teenage girl, Nicole, has been trapped inside since her disappearance in 2019. While trying to figure out a way to open the portal, Maddox, Bryan's handler, meets with his Russian counterpart to discuss a secret project between several nations to reverse engineer the remains. The team finally manages to communicate with Nicole by bringing her father Richard from her, but the portal keeps closing before they can get her out of her. Finola and Bryan locate nearby debris, which little by little runs out of energy to maintain the portal. After Finola improvises a solution using a piece of rubble to pierce the portal, it frees Nicole along with a dozen other people, some of whom were trapped for decades. Finola wonders if the emotional ties they shared with their missing loved ones is what kept them alive. The CIA exhumes Jones' remains in London and, through surveillance footage from the day of his death, realizes that a body double was buried in his place.

A chunk of rubble begins to terraform the area around a Midwest farm, causing a group of migrant peasants to mutate so that they breathe chlorine instead of oxygen, and will die if they try to leave. Bryan and Finola locate Efram, a man with relatives on the farm, and analyze his blood for ideas to save the workers. Ultimately, the decision is made to remove the rubble when it begins to spread out of control, even if it means that the workers will die. Finola then suggests using another piece of rubble to put them into suspended animation until a cure is found. Bryan convinces her not to share the truth with Efram, arguing that doing so will only complicate the situation. MI6 contacts Finola and learns that not only is her father still alive, but Bryan knew it and deliberately hid the truth from her. She frees Efram, who allows himself to be mutated so that she can reunite with his family. Bryan is upset by this and tries to ask Finola to explain why he did what he did. Finola, unable to trust him, simply leaves.
An extremist group known only as Influx is linked to an incident in New Jersey involving the disappearance of a bus through a wormhole; The group plans to recreate this on a much larger scale in the heart of New York City, and Bryan and Finola only have two hours to stop them. Bryan suggests that a video file of an incident in China could help, but the file has been deleted and Priya, Finola's manager, has to send a physical copy. When she arrives, the messenger warns her that she must not trust Priya. Watching the video, the team realizes that two convergence points are needed to open the wormhole, and they divide into squads to search every possible location. However, by the time they find the pieces, they are almost loaded and ready to open the wormhole. Bryan, with the help of an injured colleague, performs a shutdown procedure to destabilize the connection just in time as Finola helps stop one of the Influx leaders, hoping that he knows something about his father. Later, he rejects a call from Priya and instead sees a fragment of a song that she used to sing with her sister. Unbeknownst to her, the captive begins to sing the same song.
The team investigates a series of missing older people in rural Tennessee, who at first appear to be kidnappings. However, it quickly becomes clear that the disappeared have come of their own free will and have managed to achieve a form of eternal youth using a piece of rubble. Bryan decides to finally break confidentiality and reveal to Finola to what extent he has cheated on her. Finola, in turn, begins to realize that Priya has also been manipulating her. The man who transported the rubble is identified as Kurt Cox, who stubbornly refuses to hand it over until her wife Clara, overwhelmed by her guilt, convinces him to leave the rubble and commit suicide with her jumping over a Cliff. The remains are recovered and Kurt's followers are transferred to a facility to live the rest of their lives. Maddox exchanges part of the rubble with the Russians, apparently for personal reasons. During the trip, Finola tries to convince Bryan to work against Maddox, arguing that they can't trust anyone but themselves. Bryan is reluctant, as Maddox saved his life once, but tells Finola that she is being watched by the CIA.
