The story is set in the distant future. The land is ruined, and humanity establishes the mobile fort city Plantation. Pilots produced inside Plantation live in Mistilteinn, also know as the "birdcage." Children live there knowing nothing of the outside world or the freedom of the sky. Their lives consist of battling to carry out missions. Their enemies are mysterious giant lifeforms known as Kyouryuu, and the children pilot robots called Franxx to face off against them. For the children, riding the Franxx proves their existence.
A boy named Hiro is called Code:016, and he was once known as a prodigy. However, he has fallen behind, and his existence seems unnecessary. Not piloting a Franxx is the same as ceasing to exist. One day, a mysterious girl known as "Zero Two" appears before him. Two horns grow out of her head.

Darling in the FranXX synopsis
In the distant future, humanity has been driven to extinction by giant beasts called Klaxosaurs, forcing the surviving humans to take refuge in large fortress cities called Plantations. The kids who grow up here are trained to pilot giant machines known as FranXX — the only weapon known to be effective against Klaxosaurs — in boy-girl pairs. Raised for the sole purpose of piloting these machines, these children are oblivious to the outside world and can only prove their existence by protecting their race.
Hiro, an aspiring FranXX pilot, has lost motivation and confidence after failing an aptitude test. Skipping his class' graduation ceremony, Hiro frequents a lake in the woods, where he encounters a mysterious girl with two horns growing out of her head.
She introduces herself by the codename Zero Two, which is known to belong to a notorious FranXX pilot known as the "Partner Killer". Before Hiro could complete the encounter, Plantation was rocked by a surprise attack by the Klaxosaur. Zero Two engages her FranXX creature, but it is heavily damaged in the fight and falls near Hiro. Finding his partner dead, Zero Two invites Hiro to fly the plane with her, and the duo easily defeat the Klaxosaur in the ensuing fight. With a new partner by his side, Hiro has been given the chance to atone for his past failures, but at what cost?
